What is a biofilm?
A biofilm is a resilient, living community of microorganisms — including Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa — that produce a protective slimy shield. This layer quickly attaches to pool surfaces, pipework, filters, skimmers, and even tile grout, and is highly resistant to chlorine even at elevated levels.
Why is chlorine not enough?
Chlorine molecules are too large to penetrate biofilm barriers and are rapidly consumed by organic matter in water. The pathogens inside survive undetected — until shifts in temperature, pressure, or water chemistry cause the biofilm to disperse, releasing dangerous bacteria directly into the water.
Where do biofilms grow?
Pools, spas, and hot tubs offer the perfect warm, nutrient-rich environment. Biofilms thrive on internal pipework, safety covers, filter media, balance tanks, scum troughs, and showers. The combination of body oils, skin cells, and warm water creates ideal conditions for growth
